Charter Day Award Nominations

Previously, the awards listed below were given at the annual Charter Day Awards Ceremony. Due to COVID-19 events, this year's awards have been deferred until 2021. Information regarding nomination procedures and deadlines as well as information about individual awards will be made available later this fall, so please check back regularly for updates. 


ASUM Student Service Award

The ASUM Student Service Award recognizes distinguished service and achievement. The award is open to all UM students and it is offered by the Associated Students of the University of Montana. 

Robert T. Pantzer Presidential Humanitarian Award

The Robert T. Pantzer Presidential Humanitarian Award recognizes those who create a more humane learning environment at UM. The award is open to any person from the University of Montana or the State of Montana. The award is offered by the Provost’s Office. 

Neil S. Bucklew Presidential Service Award

The Neil S. Bucklew Presidential Service Award recognizes extraordinary effort to foster an understanding throughout the community and the State of UM’s needs and strengths. The award is open to a Montanan, regardless of school affiliation, and is offered by the UM Foundation. *This award will be given in the Fall at the President's Club Dinner.*

Tom Boone Town and Gown Award

The Tom Boone Town and Gown Award recognizes faculty members who foster a deeper understanding between the University of Montana and Missoula. This award is open to any faculty member and is offered by the Office of the President. 

Montana Alumni Award

The Montana Alumni Award recognizes a former UM student for extraordinary service to the University. The award is open to former UM students and is offered by the UM Alumni Association. *This award will be given in the Fall at Homecoming.*

The George M. Dennison Presidential Faculty Award for Distinguished Accomplishment

The George M. Dennison Presidential Faculty Award for Distinguished Accomplishment recognizes distinguished accomplishments that have brought significant recognition to UM at the regional and national levels. The Faculty Award is open to all tenure-track or full-time research faculty who have completed at least five years of employment with UM and whose accomplishments have brought significant recognition to the University at the regional and national levels. This award is offered by the Office of the President.   

The George M. Dennison Presidential Staff Award for Distinguished Accomplishment

The George M. Dennison Presidential Staff Award for Distinguished Accomplishment recognizes distinguished accomplishment within the employee’s work unit that brings excellence, merit, distinction or glory to UM. The Staff Award is presented to a staff member who has completed at least five years of employment with UM and recognizes a distinguished accomplishment within the employee's work unit. It is offered by the Office of the President. 

Outstanding Community Engagement Award

The Outstanding Community Engagement Award recognizes important, innovative, and mutually beneficial community engagement work at the University of Montana and is open to faculty or staff. Nominees should be deeply involved with exemplary community engagement activities connecting campus to the community through volunteerism, service learning, outreach, partnership development, community based research, etc. This work may be short or long term, may be with a single or multiple community partners, and should have been active within the past two years. Recipients will be selected based on their work to improve community and establish mutually beneficial partnerships between the University and community (local, regional, rural or international).  This award is offered by the Office of Academic Enrichment and Civic Engagement.

Outstanding Service to the External Community Award

The Outstanding Service to the External Community Award recognizes exceptional service to the off-campus community and positive contributions to the overall mission of the University. This award is open to all UM employees who are not faculty or administrators and is offered by Human Resource Services.  

John Ruffatto Memorial Award

The John Ruffatto Memorial Award recognizes UM faculty who impart practical, applicable principles into the UM classroom. It is open to tenure-track faculty and is offered by College of Business Administration.

President Royce Engstrom Endowed Prize in University Citizenship

We are excited to announce the addition of a new Charter Day award: the President Royce Engstrom Endowed Prize in University Citizenship. The prize will be awarded to a recent graduate (within ten years) of the University of Montana who, as a student, contributed in a significant way to the betterment of the University and who has remained an exemplary ambassador of the University through distinguished professional and societal service. This award will be offered by the UM Alumni Association. *This award will be given in the Fall at Homecoming.*
