Graduating senior Luke Wyman wouldn’t categorize his time at the University of Montana as easy, but he prefers it that way.

“I’ve put myself in situations where I’m not necessarily comfortable, and it’s made me stronger,” he said.

Growing up in Great Falls, Wyman played tennis and basketball and excelled in math. After his freshman year at Montana State University was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to transfer to UM.

“When I reached out to people and professors at UM, I felt very accepted,” he said. “Coming to a new school at the peak of the pandemic was challenging, but the people here made it an easy transition.”

Not content with that being his only challenge, Wyman took on professional learning opportunities.

He spent a summer working as an intern with a FedEx sales team in Memphis, where he learned more about the application of math and economics in a real-world business setting. This past year, he’s interned with the UM Alumni Association, focusing primarily on data analytics. Wyman said he enjoys looking at data as a big picture puzzle.

Wyman also served the UM community as a tutor, something he found especially rewarding.

“Being able to help other students address their problems and figure out solutions for them to be successful is something I really enjoy,” he said.

His time at UM hasn’t been all strictly working and academics. Wyman takes advantage of Missoula’s many mountain biking trails and recently joined to UM pickleball club.

He has put a lot into his time at UM and feels that has paid off in the experiences and relationships that have followed. He graduates magna cum laude this weekend.

“I feel like I can go to any of the professors I’ve had in the past and talk about my hopes for my career and what’s going on in my life,” he said.

Wyman already has a lot planned for life after graduation. This summer, he will work as a data analyst intern for Trimble, an industrial technology company.

“Being able to join other alumni who have graduated from UM means a lot to me. I know a lot of people in this state that have graduated from UM who I’m proud to be joining.”

While Wyman is excited to start his alumni journey, he’s not quite done being a UM student. He starts earning his Master of Science in Business Analytics in the College of Business this fall. He’s excited to delve deeper into the analytics field and see what career paths open up to him.

Wherever his experiences take him, he knows the Griz community will support him along the way.
